good Mom, bad Mom
TerryAugust 23, 2011 0 comments

Yesternight I had a serious tiff my 7.5 year old son and his partner in crime, his 4 year old sister. At 8:00pm, they suddenly had the urge to ride their bikes in the house. I told them to stop, they said they really needed to ride, I gave them the 'Mommy' look, you know the one your Mom used to direct at you and you stopped in your tracks, but my kids felt nothing. They continued riding.
I told their Dad to stop them, they said something to the effect that his girlfriend is mean, that made him laugh from Nairobi to Timbuktu. So I decided to ignore their antics but still kept a corner eye on them.
I was starting tolerate the rides until I don't know what happened, my son let go of his bike and it made a scratch on the dining table. I was done, what if he'd injured himself or his sister? or worse still, next time he decided to ride it in the kitchen with all its weapons of children destruction, boiling pots, fire and knives?
I had him take his bike outside with a stern warning to throw it over the fence if he didn't. He took it out, against his childhood desires whilst giving me the meanest look ever and saying how annoying I am.
His sister joined him in the mean looks department and because the girl has lip, she went ahead to tell me I'm not her friend anymore since I annoyed her best friend and play mate. I reminded her of the many times  I've had to rescue each from the other when things boil over between them, she continued to give lip.
What broke the camel's back though was when they decided they can both ride her bike like a boda bodam rider and his passenger while making those Naija mschew! sounds.
I am not in the business of raising spoilt disrespectful brats.
I'm not a big fun of spanking though sometimes I do, African style, but No, not this time. I decided to scare the nonsense out of them with what each loves the most. I have realised, my daughter loves her hair more than anything and my son, his 'johnny' is his treasure, yeah!
I took a pair of scissors, brandishing them like a Mommy who means business threatening to cut off their precious assets.
I have never seen my kids run up the stairs so fast and under their beds they went , I felt like bursting into laughter but I couldn't. I needed them to apologise and promise never to be disrespectful again before I hid the scissors. They were utterly terrified but you know kids, they soon forgot and started their 'normal' indoor games but I don't think they'll be ignoring Mommy again anytime soon.
You may not agree with the solution I used, well, am not sure it was the best but A mom gotta do what a mom gotta do. I was replaying the incident this morning and wondering how a good mom would have handled the situation but when they came to kiss me good morning, my confidence that I am a good mom was restored.
Motherhood is a journey in the quest of raising the best kids. Sometimes its ridden with self doubt - an occupational hazard of being a mom.
So how do you know if you’re actually being a good mother? Figuring out what works for you and your kids and learning to trust yourself is the best way, says http://www.webmd.com/parenting/features/being-good-mom.
I'm raising my children to be the best they can be, and good citizens of the world, yet I have no maua nopt that I need one, i take all challenges in my stride as i prepare them to handle life’s curve balls -- a tough task for kids who have always gotten their way or have no discipline.

Some mothers are kissing mothers and some are scolding mothers, but it is love just the same, and most mothers kiss and scold together.  ~Pearl S. Buck

TGIF

I love Fridays. At the university I go to, the founders had the insight to know the need to develop wholesome individuals so they set Friday aside as a co-curricular day, a day for clubs and associations though there are classes in the afternoon. Noble idea, they gave me an extra free day!
I have never taken a Friday class and don't plan to unless ofcourse I have no other options on the academic schedule or the Lecturer is super fantastic neither do I join clubs that meet on Friday. I always wanted to join Rotaract club (they travel a lot), but they meet on Fridays!
I am a member of the Public Relations as well as the Journalism club because 'great minds think alike' so we hold meetings during the week, 30 minutes in between classes, and these are very vibrant clubs mind you, no wonder I can't afford the 2 hour ones on Friday, I like to work smart. but do I say ?
So what do I on Fridays? I go with the flow / mood. However there are must do's; drop and pick up my kids to and from school, take them to the Library at 3pm then enjoy a treat. I don't have to include browsing the net since by now you know it's no longer one of my hobbies, it's a TALENT! huh!

do you love Fridays?

I am blessed

My kids sometimes drive me up the wall, so does Mr. I'm sure sometimes they feel the same way about me too. Yet, I love them to bits and am sure they love me too.
As I sit here ignoring their(kids) high decibel play, oblivious to my need for silence when watching my favourite soap  Ooooh this Jose Miguel guy is so HOT I realize how blessed I am to have a wonderful family.

A blessed Easter !

A reading culture
TerryApril 18, 2011 0 comments

In one of my last broadcast classes, the lecturer lamented that students no longer wrote well, creatively and keenly. One of the prominent reasons is that of a dying reading culture beyond the classroom fueled by the sms / facebook shorthand language.
I have decided to develop good and consistent reading habits to avert this crisis, at least from within. That's why we've (my kids and I) have taken up membership at our local library; access to five floors of all genres. I studied for my exams at the library last week and I loved it mucho mucho. Today I took the kids for their first ever lib. session and they loved it, infact they didn't want to leave. I'm a lucky Momma !!.

We've found a new way to hang out together and bond ........ over books.

Disclaimer : I'm no fashion/style guru so take my advice at your own risk.

At the beginning of the year I decided to try out a few new things in 2011, make-up/fashion/style wise and yeah! I have tried, some drastic, some mild. For instance, I highlighted streaks of my hair then 'hennad' it, the result is amazing (though I think henna rinses out with each weekly wash), I've been 'dressing' and 'skirting' a lot lately and going by the many comments plus ofcourse the woman in the mirror and the hot feeling inside, it's working.
Now to the subject, I have also been 'lipsticking'. Usually I just do black eye pencil I have very beautiful eyes if I may say so myself and NO! I don't wear contact, God blessed me and my kids with very brown pupils.
Back to lipstick, recently I meet people and they're like "did your skin tone change overnight? You look lighter" mmmmmmmmhhhhm, No it didn't. I'll tell y'all the secret av been keeping to myself .....brown lipstick, Yes, that's it !!!
I bought a gold-ish shade and had been wearing it for about a week when my friend Maureen Ombar said to me "You know what would really look good on you? very brown lipstick". MO is a lipstick guru so guess what I did that evening when I got home?
I found one, not so dark but I decided to buy it anyway. When I wore it the following day, the skin shade/tone Qs started. One of my very good friends, Jane actually called me point 5.
I thought it must be something in their water or their eyesight  until one day we (journalism club) were taking impromptu photos and after we were done Jane said unfortunately I had forgotten to apply the .5 lipstick. That was when it hit me .....byamnn!! The answer was in the 'trial and error' Ksh. 50 signature lipstick #30.
I've been experimenting lately to get opinions/comments, yeah ! that's it.
If you are what we Kenyans love to call brown, try some brown lipstick and tell me if you get the same reactions and Qs as I do.
you can 'bless' me with this Bobby Brown one
If you see me kinda prominent pointie faced, blame it on the lipstick.

Buenas Tardes !

I told y'all HERE that am gonna make lots of goodies for mis hijos y mi esposo a lot more this year. Today I was in church all ears to the living word when I had this very strong urge to make mandazis, I couldn't wait to get home and quench the deep urge.
Luckily, av perfected the art of mandazi making so I didn't have a Cinnamon roll moment.
